CNC Controller Retrofit Guide for Laser¶
System Identification¶
Plug and Play CNC Control Systems
If you purchased the Laser Kit with a Plug and Play CNC Control System, the necessary components will come pre-installed.
In this section you will identify component requirements to ensure you have a supported configuration. This information will assist you in following the correct installation steps.
Plug and Play CNC Controller Requirements
The Avid CNC Laser Kit requires the following components and revisions for successful installation.
- CRP850-00E Breakout Board: Revision F-01 or later
Note
Most Avid CNC controllers can be upgraded to meet these requirements. Please Contact Us for assistance with upgrading your CNC controller or determining your current component revisions.
Locating Your Breakout Board Revision
The CRP850-00E Breakout Board Revision can be found printed on the top-left corner of the board installed in your existing controller as seen in Figure 1. Ribbon cables may need to be folded out of the way to access.

Figure 1
Laser Retrofit Instructions¶
Assembly Note
Ensure your CNC control box is powered off with the power cable disconnected from the box. It is also recommended to remove your CNC control box from the machine to perform this retrofit.
-
CRP850-00E Breakout Board Upgrade: Upgrade a breakout board from a revision earlier than F-01 (2019). Complete the upgrade before continuing with the Laser retrofit.
-
CRP800 CNC Controller without optional plasma card: This configuration will require installation of a CRP890-00E board included in your Laser kit.
-
CRP800 CNC Controller with optional plasma card: This configuration will utilize terminals on your existing plasma board to interface with your Laser system.
CRP850-00E Breakout Board Upgrade¶
Section Note
CRP800 CNC Controller without breakout board revision F-01 or later. For this controller configuration, the older revision CRP850-00E board will need to be replaced with a later revision prior to installing the laser specific retrofit components in a future section.

Replacing the CRP850-00E Board
- Disconnect the power cord from the power source and from the CRP800 CNC Controller.
Figure 2 - Disconnect the two larger (26 pin) ribbon cables from Port 1 and Port 2 and the smaller (16 pin) ribbon cable from Port 7 on the old CRP850 Board.
- Disconnect the Ethernet cable and 5V power 2-pin plug in terminal block (green) from the ESS. Do not remove blue and blue/white wires from their screw terminals in the 2-pin plug in terminal block.
- Unscrew the (4) phillips screws securing the ESS and remove it from the corresponding (4) standoffs.
- Disconnect wires from the old CRP850 Board installed in the controller by first loosening their corresponding screw terminals.
- Unscrew the (2) phillips screws securing the old CRP850 Board to the (2) M6 Standoffs. Carefully pull the old board out of the motor driver connections.
-
Remove the (4) standoffs and their corresponding (4) philips screws from the old board and transfer them to the new CRP850-00E-F04 Board.
Figure 3Assembly Note
The new board may have blue or green screw terminal blocks. Standoffs not shown in Figure 3.
-
The CRP850-00E-F04 Board is equipped with two jumpers that need to be set depending on the application of the machine. The JPFault jumpers are located near the fault terminals as shown in Figure 3.
Figure 4- For Spindle/Router only machines: Set the two jumpers so they connect across the pins as shown in Figure 4.
Figure 5 - For any Plasma machine, including dual purpose (spindle and plasma) machines: Set the two jumpers so the pins are unconnected as shown in Figure 5.
- For Spindle/Router only machines: Set the two jumpers so they connect across the pins as shown in Figure 4.
-
Install the new CRP850-00E-F04 Board onto the motor drives, pushing down firmly at each motor drive connection to make sure it is fully seated. Secure to the (2) M6 Standoffs.

Figure 8 - Reinstall the ESS and reconnect Ethernet and 5V power to the ESS as shown in Figure 8. Use the (4) Aluminum Standoffs supplied with the retrofit kit to secure the ESS to the standoffs on the CRP850-00E-F04 Board.
-
Reconnect the smaller 16-pin ribbon cable to Port 7 of the CRP850-00E-F04 Board as shown in Figure 8.
Assembly Note
The orientation of the 26 pin ports on the CRP850-00E-F04 Board (Shown) is different from some previous revisions. Ensure cables are connected as shown and described.
ESS Lower Port -> CRP850 Port 2
ESS Upper Port -> CRP850 Port 1
Check the CRP850-00E Board for port labeling. -
Reconnect the two larger 26 pin ribbon cables as shown in Figure 8.

M12 Panel Mount Installation
- Disconnect the power cord from the power source and from the CRP800 CNC Controller.
Figure 9 - Determine if the gland plate on your CRP800 CNC Controller has pre-punched AUX 3 and AUX 4 holes as shown in Figure 9. If your gland plate has the AUX 3 and AUX 4 holes, proceed to Step 5. If it does not, you will need to drill your own holes for the M12 Panel Mounts.
-
For CRP800 CNC Controllers without the AUX 3 and AUX 4 holes, drill two 5/8 inch diameter holes located as shown in Figure 9.
Assembly Note
Be sure to thoroughly vacuum your CNC Controller after drilling to remove any metal shavings from the controller. To minimize debris in your controller, it is possible to remove the gland plate prior to drilling by removing the screws holding it to the controller box.
-
Label the holes AUX 3 and AUX 4 as shown in Figure 9. Proceed to Step 6.
- Remove the rubber plugs in the AUX 3 and AUX 4 holes.
Figure 10 - Install the supplied M12 Panel Mounts on the gland plate as shown in Figure 10. Secure the panel mounts with the supplied nuts from the rear of the gland plate, sliding them over the wire leads. Gently tighten the panel mounts using the 17mm and 18mm wrenches.
CRP890-00E Board Installation
- Open CRP800 Controller lid. What you see should look similar to Figure 11.
Figure 11 - Remove the 4 screws circled in Figure 11 securing the Ethernet Smooth Stepper (ESS) to the existing aluminum standoffs. Retain the removed screws for use in a later step.
Figure 12
Figure 13 -
Insert the threaded end of the provided Aluminum Standoffs into the holes on the ESS where you just removed the screws, as shown in Figure 13.
Figure 14Assembly Note
If the ribbon cables connecting the ESS to the CRP850-00E Board cross over the top of the ESS (Figure 14), swap the cable ends so that the cable faces away from the ESS, as shown in Figure 13. Change one cable at a time so that the correct connections are maintained.

Connect the blue and black wire leads from the AUX 4 M12 Panel Mount to the CRP850-00E Board as shown in Figure 15. The white and brown wires for this M12 Panel Mount are not used and should be looped up out of the way.
- Gently tug on the wire connections to ensure they are tight.
Figure 16 -
Install the CRP890-00E Board on top of the ESS (Figure 16), attaching it to the Aluminum Standoffs with the screws removed from the ESS in Step 2. The 26 pin connector on the CRP890-00E Board will mate with the 26 pin connector on the ESS.
