9.1 - Supplemental Videos¶

This Pro-Build video provides a walk-through of the electronics installation and is supplementary to the written instructions in this section. Be sure to reference the written instructions as they contain the correct cable lengths and sensor installation procedures for your specific machine.

Note: For customers with Servo motors, the motor cable routing portion of this video is only applicable to the motor control cables and not to the motor power cables.

9.2 - Preparation¶

9.2.1 - Axes and Sign Convention¶

These axis and sign conventions correspond to Avid CNC's CNC12 configuration. The color of each axis will be used when labeling motor and sensor cables.

9.2.2 - Motor and Sensor Locations¶

When necessary, reference this image to determine the location of each motor and sensor.

9.2.3 - Cable Labeling¶

Prior to routing motor and sensor cables on the machine, it is recommended to label each cable with the appropriate motor or sensor connection (reference tables below). Using colored labels will make cable identification easier.

9.3 - Proximity Sensors¶

9.3.1 - X Axis Sensor Installation¶

9.3.1.1¶

1. Move the gantry carriage to the end of the gantry.

9.3.1.2¶

1. Install an M12 x 1.0 Hex Jam Nut G onto a NBN8-12GM50-E0-V1 Cylindrical Proximity Sensor A.
2. Thread the sensor into the gantry R&P plate.

9.3.1.3¶

1. Continue threading the sensor clockwise until it touches the sensor flag, as shown.

9.3.1.4¶

1. Thread the sensor counterclockwise three complete turns.

9.3.1.5¶

1. Continue threading the sensor counterclockwise until the X sensor cable (with right-angle connector) can be attached to the sensor with the cable oriented towards the cable track, as shown.

9.3.1.6¶

1. Fully tighten the sensor's M12 jam nut.

9.3.1.7¶

1. Attach a Rubber Bumper D to the right bumper plate using an M6 x 20mm16mm Socket Head Cap Screw E .

1. Repeat the previous step to install a rubber bumper on the other side of the gantry.

9.3.2 - Y Axis Sensor Installation¶

9.3.2.1¶

1. Prior to installing the Cube Proximity Sensor B, attach the Y2- sensor cable to the sensor.
2. Attach the sensor to the riser plate using M4 x 25mm Socket Head Cap Screws C .

9.3.2.2¶

1. Repeat the previous step to install the Y1- and Y2+ sensors.

1. Move the gantry to the front of the machine so the Damper is bottomed out on the Bumper Plate as shown.
2. Adjust the M8 x 30mm Fine Pitch Socket Head Cap Screw so the tip is 1.5-3mm (1/16" - 1/8") from the face of the sensor.
3. Lock the position with the M8 nut.
4. Perform these steps on the left and right side of the machine.

9.3.3 - Z Axis Sensor Installation¶

9.3.3.1¶

1. Install a Cylindrical Proximity Sensor A onto the Z axis motor plate using two M12 x 1.0 Hex Jam Nuts H .

9.3.3.2¶

1. Position the sensor 14.5mm (9/16")
   22mm (7/8") from the bottom of the Z axis motor plate. The tip of the sensor must be above the face of the damper to avoid damage to the sensor during homing.
2. Fully tighten the M12 jam nuts.

9.5 - Cable/Hose Installation¶

9.5.1 - Cable Track Preparation¶

1. Prior to routing cables through the cable track, it is recommended to open each cable track link using a small screwdriver.

9.5.2 - Routing¶

Z-Axis Cable Routing Warning

The z-axis motor cable(s), proximity sensor cable, and brake cable all exit the z-axis cable track at the top of the z-axis, at the back of the axis. Correct routing shown below. Do not route these cables all the way through the z-axis cable track. Doing so will result in catastrophic damage to the cables, sensor, motor, and brake.

9.5.2.1¶

1. Attach a Motor Cable Adapter L to the end of each motor cable.
2. Connect each motor cable to their respective motor.
3. Route the cable as indicated in the image and table.

9.5.2.2¶

1. Insert M8 Roll-in T-nuts I on the back of the right side of the gantry.
2. Attach the Servo Power Hub H to the back of the gantry using the M8 x 12mm Button Head Cap Screws J.
3. The edge of the mounting bracket should be 63mm (2-1/2") from the joining bar.

Assembly Note

The Servo Power Hub is shown without cables for clarity. Your power hub will come with four cables installed.

1. The power hub should be oriented with the RD-24 panel mount facing the right side of the gantry, when looking from the front of the machine.

Alternate Cable Track Location

If locating the cable track on the left side of the machine, install the Servo Power Hub on the left side of the gantry with the RD-24 panel mount facing left.

1. Route each motor power cable to its respective motor as shown in the image.
2. Connect each motor power cable to the motor.
3. Connect the RD-24 Power Cable K to the Servo Power Hub H and route it through the cable track as shown.

1. Connect each sensor cable to their respective sensor.
2. Route the cable as indicated in the image and table. (see next page)
3. Attach one M12 Splitter G to the end of the proximity sensor cable at the z-axes and then attach the split ends to a proximity sensor on each Z-axis.
4. Attach one M12 Splitter G to the end of the brake cable at the z-axes and then attach the split ends to a brake on each Z-axis.

9.5.2.6¶

1. Route the router power cord cable as indicated.
2. Route the spindle cable as indicated (connection to the spindle will be completed in future steps).
3. Route the plasma cables as indicated (installation of torch will be completed in future steps).
4. If you are adding a Laser Kit, visit Laser Assembly to route the described components now, then return to this document.

9.5.2.7¶

1. Route the 8-pin M12 Cable, 28' N and 8mm Hose M as indicated. The path is identical to the M23 cable routed in the previous step.
2. Connect one end of the 8mm Hose M to the 8mm to 6mm Wye Fitting at the spindle and the other end to the Air Regulator.
3. Supply air to the Air Regulator and set the pressure to 105 PSI (functional range: 95-115 PSI).
4. Connect one end of the 8-pin M12 Cable N to the corresponding panel mount on the spindle and the other end to the 24V Wall Adapter O.

9.5.3 - Spindle Connections¶

9.5.3.1¶

1. Connect the female end of the M23 68 Conductor Spindle Cable C to the spindle. Ensure the connector is seated before tightening.

Assembly Note

It may be necessary to rotate the M23 cable to allow it to seat properly. During this process you will feel the connector drop into place when the pins and sockets of the connector align.

9.5.4 - Plasma Connections¶

The correct Ohmic retaining cap or Ohmic retaining ring must be used to connect to the PRO CNC Plasma system. Refer to the Torch System Compatibility chart for more information.

9.5.4.1¶

Torch Option

Skip this step if using a Powermax SYNC torch.

1. A Hypertherm ohmic retaining cap must be used (picture at top). Remove the standard retaining cap, but do not install the ohmic retaining cap until after the torch has been installed in the torch mount.

1. Install the Hypertherm Plasma Torch A into the torch mount assembly.

Assembly Note

Ohmic retaining cap and tip shield must be removed prior to installation.

9.5.4.3¶

1. Position the tip of the torch roughly 165mm (6-1/2") from the bottom of the torch mount assembly.

9.5.4.4¶

1. Install and tighten the M5 x 16mm Socket Head Cap Screw B clamping screw.

Assembly Note

Only tighten the fastener tight enough to prevent the torch from moving. Over-tightening can damage the torch.

9.5.4.5¶

1. Install the ohmic retaining cap onto the torch.
2. Attach the quick disconnect from the torch mount to the ohmic retaining cap.

Powermax SYNC Torches

For Powermax SYNC torches, use the HYP420580 Ohmic Ring and install as shown below.

9.6.1 - Table Cable Track¶

9.6.1.1¶

1. Move the gantry to the back of the machine.

9.6.1.2¶

1. Move the cable track towards the front of the cable track tray until the start of the cable track bend is located at the riser cable track bracket.

9.6.1.3¶

1. Attach the cable track to the closest slot, towards the back of the machine, using M6 x 12mm Flat Head Screws A , M6 Flat Washers B , and M6 Hex Jam Nuts C .

9.6.2 - Gantry Cable Track¶

9.6.2.1¶

1. Move the gantry to the left end of the machine (looking from the front).

9.6.2.2¶

1. Move the cable track towards the left end of the cable track tray (looking from the back of the machine) until the start of the cable track bend is located at the gantry cable track bracket.

9.6.2.3¶

1. Attach the cable track to the closest slot, towards the right end of the machine, using M6 x 12mm Flat Head Screws A , M6 Flat Washers B , and M6 Hex Jam Nuts C .

9.7.1 - EX Controller¶

1. At the indicated locations, remove the plastic plugs from the EX Controller.

9.7.1.2¶

1. At the locations with removed plugs, attach a Mounting Bracket C using M8 x 20mm Hex Bolts A and M8 Hex Nuts B .

9.7.1.3¶

1. Attach the EX Controller to the leg kit using M8 x 25mm Set Screws D , M8 Hex Flange Nuts E , and M8 Roll-in T-Nuts F .

9.7.2 - Plug and Play Spindle/VFD System¶

9.7.2.1¶

1. At the indicated locations, remove the plastic plugs from the Plug and Play Spindle/VFD Control Box.

Alternate Cable Track Location

If locating the table cable track on the left side of the machine, remove the plug from the bottom right instead of the bottom left.

9.9 - Control Box Connections¶

9.9.1 - EX Controller¶

9.9.1.1¶

1. Connect each motor control cable to the appropriate motor port.

9.9.1.2¶

1. Connect each sensor cable to the appropriate sensor port.
2. Dual-use machines will need to use the M12 Sensor Cable Splitter I to connect both the Z+ and U+ sensors to the Z sensor port.

9.9.1.3¶

1. Connect the Emergency Stop Cable, 20' A to the E Stop port.
2. Connect the other end of this cable to the Emergency Stop B .

9.9.1.4¶

1. Connect the Tool Height Setter J to the Aux 2 port.
2. Connect the optional Auto Z and Corner Finding Touch Plate G to the Aux 1 port.

9.9.1.5¶

1. Connect the Sensor Cable, 12' H to the Aux 5 port.
2. Connect the other end of this cable to the cable previously routed to the Plasma Torch Mount.

9.9.1.6¶

1. If you purchased the optional Auxiliary Power Relay to control power to your router from your EX Controller, plug the M12 Sensor Cable, included with the Auxiliary Power Relay, into the RELAY port.

9.9.1.7¶

1. Connect the SP/THC Cable E to the SP/THC port.
2. Connect the other end of this cable to your Hypertherm plasma power unit.
3. This cable will be connected to the Plug and Play Spindle / VFD Control Box in a future step.
4. Depending on your current cutting method, this port will be connected to either the Plug and Play Spindle / VFD Control Box (in a future step), or your Hypertherm plasma power unit.

Assembly Note

Ensure the SP/THC cable labeled "PLASMA ONLY" is utilized for connecting to your plasma power unit. Using the incorrect SP/THC cable will cause poor cutting performance.

1. Connect the Ethernet Cable, 10' D to the NET port.
2. Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to your control PC.

9.9.1.9¶

1. Connect the RD-24 Power Cable to the Power port.

Assembly Note

The Rotary port is used for the servo motor power cable on a CNC Rotary Axis.

1. Attach a Cable Tie Mount B to the riser extrusion using an M6 x 12mm Button Head Cap Screw E and M6 Roll-in T-Nut F .

1. Repeat previous step to attach two additional cable tie mounts at the indicated locations.

9.10.1.3¶

1. Use a cable tie to secure the Y- sensor cable and Y1 motor cable to the cable tie mount.

9.10.1.4¶

1. Use cable ties to secure the cables routed from the gantry cable track to the table cable track.

9.10.2 - Cable Bracket¶

9.10.2.1¶

1. Attach the Cable Bracket A to the inside of the electronics mounting bar using M8 x 12mm Button Head Cap Screws E and M8 Roll-in T-Nuts F .
2. Position the Cable Bracket roughly in the middle of the available space, where it best fits your application.

9.10.2.2¶

1. Coil any excess length of cables and hang on the cable bracket.
